Vapor Chamber

Emmerson has croup. Don't ask me how. I have kept her home from church for the last month (croup and RSV have been going around our ward like crazy), and I attack every shopping cart with Clorox wipes before I let Emmerson near it. But Sunday morning she got a cough and by evening she was having a hard time breathing. Ben had meetings so I loaded Emmy into the car and drove her to the after-hours clinic at my pediatrician's office. The clinic opens at 6:00 p.m. Feeling sneaky, I left so that I could be there at 5:50. So did the rest of St. George. After waiting in a room full of coughing children, we found out that Emmerson has croup. The doctor gave her a steroid shot and told me to sleep in her room for the next two nights in case she stopped breathing (if that's not intimidating I don't know what is). So I set up an air mattress in the nursery and fired up the humidifier, successfully turning her room into a vapor chamber of healing, as we like to call it.

On a side note, I want to formally apologize to anyone (Brian and Lyndsey) who has ever slept on our air mattress. I had no idea it leaked that much. It is my personal vow to buy a new one before we need to use it again.

Apparently croup gives Emmerson more energy. She has NOT slept since Sunday. Last night around 2 am, she was crawling around the air mattress playing with my phone. I thought it was locked. It wasn't. Emmerson called my sweet relief society president. She texted back, worried that something had happened. Sorry Trina. I will keep my cell phone out of reach in the middle of the night.

Luckily, Emmerson seems to be on the mend. She is finally napping. YEA!!! I am dizzy from trying to decide what to do while she is asleep. I opted not to shower. I may regret that later.

LOL! first, croup sucks! no other words to describe it. second my kids don't sleep for days after that very helpful shot of steroids. it wires them. third i really just laughed about your air mattress. it could be worse i am sure!

Ugh. I loathe croup. And more than that I loathe the steroid shots. When Ethan was 2 he was put on steroids for a week for breathing issues. After 3 days I started to wonder how important breathing really was!! Hopefully things will keep improving and you can get some sleep.

I don't remember steriods being used when our kids were little. Croup? But then, did any of our kids ever get sick? Think Deb's memories are the same?

Sorry you are having to go through that, Jena. She is still cute, I expect, and can't wait to see her, and you and Ben of course, again!

Like everyone else said, it is the steroids. Both of mine have asthma and the steroids and the albuterol keeps them up and at it.
